Racial Violence
Long Hot Summers- During the summer of 1967, 159 race riots broke out across the U.S. These riots resulted in hundreds of arrests and beatings by police officers.
Watts Riot- A series of riots that broke out in Los Angeles and resulted in 34 deaths 1,032 injuries and 3,438 arrests.It was the most violent riots the city ever faced and some consider it the turning point in the movement.
Detroit Riots of 1967- Full scale riots broke out in Detroit after the police raided a local bar without a warrant. The riots lasted for 5 days and took 43 lives with it. President Lyndon B. Johnson finally ended the conflict by sending in military troops.
Kerner Commission- The Kerner Commission was a group established by the president to help end the race riots of 1967. In these conferences Johnson asked three basic questions "What happened? Why did it happen? What can be done to prevent it from happening again and again?".
Assassination of MLK- Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis TN. King was shot inside of the Loraine Motel by James Earls Ray. MLK's legacy still lives on as the predominant leader in the civil rights movement and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
