In 1957, federal court orders required that nine African American students be admitted into Central High School of Little Rock, Arkansas. The governor of Arkansas, Orval Faubus was strongly opposed to the idea and order troops from the Arkansas National Guard to prevent the students from entering the school. In doing so, Faubus challenged the Constitution by using armed forces of a state to oppose the federal government. Eisenhower knew that he couldn't allow Faubus to defy the federal government, so he and Orval had a conference. However, the conference was extremely unproductive (as neither of the two could agree on anything) so the district court ordered the governor to remove the troops, leaving the nine to the angry white mob. The violence that resulted from the mob pushed President Eisenhower to order the U.S. Army to send troops to Little Rock to protect the nine African Americans. These troops had to stay in Little Rock for the rest of the school year.
